On this edition of StrataMedia Research, Jacquelyn sits down with institutional research analyst Alexander Beaudry to break down his most recent report titled “Stock or Stonk Tokens? The Story Behind Robinhood Chain's Initial Success”. In the episode he explains how meme-stock trading pairs have led to the historic rise of activity on Robinhood Chain, making it the fastest growing Layer-2 network in Ethereum’s history.

Stock or Stonk Tokens? The Story Behind Robinhood Chain's Initial Success

Robinhood built its blockchain to put stocks onchain. Ten weeks later it is the busiest Layer-2 in Ethereum’s history.

Stock Tokens, Robinhood’s tokenized equity product, are being touted as a main reason for the chain’s success, but in reality their adoption tells only part of the story, and it would be a miss to classify them as being the only driver of growth.

Instead, a web of token launchpads, social trading apps, and memecoins have made Robinhood Chain one of the most exciting venues in crypto right now.

What are Stock Tokens

Before we get into that, let’s explain what Robinhood Stock Tokens are (and aren’t.)

The long winded explanation is that these are  tokenized debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited that are backed one-to-one by real shares held with a licensed custodian.

The short one: it is an onchain equity wrapper issued as a debt instrument.

They do not offer voting rights, a claim on the company, or legal ownership. However, they do offer 24/7 price exposure within more than 120 countries, can move between wallets, be used as collateral in lending markets, and sit in liquidity pools.

So for a trader outside the US who wants Nvidia exposure, these Stock Tokens could be a helpful way in, but for investors wanting real ownership – they would be better served buying a company issued tokenized stock or from a traditional exchange.

The Meteoric Rise

Robinhood Chain launched July 1, 2026, as part of a broader announcement which saw the unveiling of Stock Tokens, Robinhood Earn (Robinhood’s decentralized lending product), and an updated Robinhood Wallet experience.

The chain is an Ethereum Layer-2, built using the Arbitrum Stack, meaning all transactions settle on Ethereum and gas fees are paid in ETH.

About 70 days after launch, it leads the ranks against almost every other chain in terms of fees, revenue, and DEX volume.

Base is the only other L2 that ever launched with a retail-heavy brokerage behind it, Coinbase, and thus makes for a good comparison to Robinhood Chain.

In the Fall of 2023, Base’s launch felt enormous. Coinbase had brought a public company's balance sheet to an L2, friend.tech was minting fortunes weekly, and it felt like all of crypto was migrating over. However, that entire episode would prove miniscule against what Robinhood Chain has done since July.

Robinhood Chain's 70-day timeframe beat Base's by nearly five times by user count. Its ecosystem TVL was twelve times higher, while Robinhood’s transaction throughput, at the same age, was roughly forty times higher than Base.

As for DEX volumes, Robinhood Chain consistently ranks in the top two, fighting Solana for the top spot.

During the week of August 31, Robinhood’s DEXs handled 66.3% of all tokenized stock trading, beating BNBChain with 23.5%, and Solana with 6.3%.

What’s making Robinhood Chain skyrocket

Robinhood Chain’s growth can be attributed to a few key pillars. Falling in descending order, those pillars are:

  1. Robinhood’s Gas Subsidy: When Robinhood launched, it announced a 90 day gas subsidy, where the company would cover transaction fees for its users during that timeframe. By comparison, 11 days in, the chain was clearing 7.6 million daily transactions against Base's 9.2 million.

  2. Memecoins: In July, memecoins accounted for 79.2% of all DEX volume on the chain. Pons, a launchpad charging roughly $1 per token creation, has produced about 646,000 tokens from more than 167,000 unique creator addresses since July. In early September, it collected $5.95 million in fees on just one day, ranking it fourth among all protocols tracked by DefiLlama, ahead of pump.fun at $4.64 million and Hyperliquid at $2 million, and ahead of Robinhood Chain itself at $4 million.

  3. Robinhood as a listing venue: On August 6, Robinhood listed $CASHCAT, a memecoin named after the company’s pre-2010 corporate name, on its main app. Since the listing, it’s risen 57%, and had a peak of $290 million in market cap on September 3.

  4. Day-one infrastructure: Major integrations from Uniswap, Morpho, Chainlink (CCIP, Data Streams, and Data Feeds all live at mainnet), Paxos, BitGo, Alchemy, Lighter, 1inch, and Rialto shipped on July 1, allowing Robinhood to have a pre-built ecosystem from day one.

The Journey So Far

July 1: Its mainnet launched at Robinhood's "World is Flat" event alongside Stock Tokens, Robinhood Earn (self-custody USDG lending at roughly 7% APY through Morpho, with Lloyd's of London and RELM coverage), agentic crypto trading for US users, and an EU perpetuals expansion into commodities, ETFs, and FX. The 90-day gas subsidy began the same day.

July 8: Robinhood Wallet integration shipped, with bridges from Solana, Ethereum, and Arbitrum, allowing funds to flow into Robinhood Chain.

Early July: $CASHCAT launched days after mainnet and peaked near $0.23 on July 11.

July 17: StonkBrokers minted 4,444 NFTs free, using ERC-6551 token-bound wallets pre-loaded with tokenized stocks, making it the first product to fuse equities with collectibles. One month later, its market cap peaked at $56.8 million.

July 21: Robinhood Chain passed Base on daily active addresses two weeks after launch.

August 6: $CASHCAT is listed on Robinhood, creating a pipeline for its ecosystem tokens to reach a mass retail audience.

Late August: Long.xyz reached scale with stock-paired memecoin alongside stock-paired trades reaching roughly 34% of total RWA trading volume on the chain.

August 31: Daily DEX volume hit $989 million. TVL roughly doubled month-over-month. Pons, a place to launch and trade tokens on Robinhood Chain, collected $4.89 million in fees in a day, passing the popular memecoin launch platform Pump.fun.

September 1–4: DEX volume ran between $1.55 billion and $3.14 billion daily. Chain fees peaked at $6.4 million on September 4. Around 25,000 new tokens launch on Pons in a single day. By early September, 432 stock-paired pools held about $8.84 million in stock tokens and turned over $95.3 million in 24 hours.

What the timeline shows

Every acceleration in the chain's metrics seems to correspond to a speculative product instead of an equity one. The gas subsidy made the chain cheap to use. Pons gave developers the tools to build. The CASHCAT listing set a precedent for memecoins on Robinhood.

Long.xyz is arguably the most interesting aspect of this all as it is the only one that is genuinely unique to Robinhood Chain. A stock-paired memecoin trades directly against a Robinhood Stock Token rather than against ETH or a stablecoin. Every pool needs inventory of both sides, so memecoin speculation mechanically manufactures stock token demand. Tokenized equity adoption on Robinhood Chain is, to a meaningful degree, a byproduct of retail-fueled trading.

The holder data confirms this with tokenized stocks on the chain having 1.2 million holders against $157.1 million in market value, an average position of $128.

Nvidia has 153,700 holders and $20.9 million outstanding, about $136 each, while SpaceX has 95,700 holders averaging $188.

This pattern indicates that these holders are not long term investors looking to build exposure, but instead traders holding positions tied to memes.

Moving Forward

Three clocks are currently running down that have the power to influence Robinhood Chain’s performance moving forward.

1. Its subsidy expires September 29

The gas fee subsidy has been a major catalyst for Robinhood chain’s success so far, and if not renewed, its expiration could pull back usage and interest within the chain's ecosystem.

2. The Fed is making a decision on rates

Inflation has not cooperated. August CPI, released September 11, rose 0.4% on the month and held at 3.4% year over year, with gasoline up 3.9% and accounting for more than a third of the monthly increase.

At the Jackson Hole symposium in August, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the summer's better-than-expected readings had not shown meaningful improvement in the underlying trend, and markets repriced hard: hold odds fell from roughly 70% before the speech to a coin flip after it.

The CPI print just added fuel to the flame. Hike odds touched 81.3% on the day and now sit near 78% on Kalshi and the mid-80s on CME FedWatch, with more than $215 million wagered across prediction markets.

A quarter-point move on September 17 would lift the target range to 3.75%–4.00%, the first increase since July 2023, and it would land twelve days before the gas subsidy lapses.

This matters more for Robinhood Chain than for most crypto assets, because the chain's activity is almost pure risk appetite. There is no yield farm here paying a rate that competes with T-bills, no treasury strategy, no institutional flow that arrives regardless of the tape.

If history repeats itself, memecoins are the first thing to decline when the cost of capital rises and the marginal retail speculator decides to sit out a month. A hike into an already-softening meme cycle, arriving days before users start paying gas, is about as unhelpful a sequence as you could design.

Crypto moves quickly and the hot trend of today could be old news tomorrow. Take friend.tech for example, it peaked roughly two months after Base launched and was effectively userless within a year. Meanwhile, pump.fun's volume and interest has cycled repeatedly. Every launchpad that has ever dominated a chain's fee table eventually gave the position back.

Our prediction

Given what we know, we expect the daily active users to fall sharply in the first two weeks of October as subsidized and farmed activity disappears and Pons fee revenue may also see a decline due to increased gas costs.

With that in mind, we still don’t expect TVL, stablecoin supply, Robinhood Earn deposits, and the money market fund balances to decline much. This capital is less sensitive to gas prices and should continue to grow given the preceding activity and user behavior.

If a hike lands on September 17 and the subsidy expires on the 29th, the two together may harm Robinhood Chain’s volume and transaction count as memecoin activity can skirt away. The initial wave of hype will have passed, leaving space for Robinhood’s more institutional-facing products, like Stock Tokens, yield products, and equity trading to steal the show.
